Diplom Is

I was asked to make 3 matte paintings for a commercial for a danish ice cream brand, Diplom Is.
The scene was Valhalla, known from the Nordic mythology.

How does the landscape just outside Valhalla look? The art director ment that the dead vikings had to cross
a field of fallen warriors, but for some reason the ice company thought that it was a little too much for an ice dream
commercial (sissys :)) So everyone agreed that it was more like a summer meadow (yaawn). Anyway, this scene is
so short and hazy that no one really cares....

And... how does the entrance to Valhalla then look? Big, for one, a lot of wood and a huge stairway. I started out from the
story board frame and made a quick colour sketch. When approved, we, Tonni Zinck from RADAR Film and I, searched
the Nordic litterature for visual references and were closing in on a mixture of Viking styles to correspond with the interior
ideas. Again, as mentioned in my tutorials I painted the basic shapes according to the light and then added photographic
textures to add chaos to the painting. Later RADAR Film added camera projection with a slow tilt and 3D fog crawling down the stairs.

This was a hard one. The ice came out of these golden horns inside Valhalla. Since golden things reflect evething
around them, I had to make up things in the near surrounding to reflect in the horns. They were to be like gold, but in a
bronze way, only with a colder tone of colour - and of course in the light of 30 torches.... :)
A hard one, but it came out nicely, I think.
